Huntington Beach has issues that need attention right now!

The HB City Council has taken the position tha HB does not have to comply with certain California laws (housing, voting, others) because we are a “Charter City”. As a result, the city is engaged in many lawsuits with the state.

Petitions to Protect our Libraries

Protect HB, along with the HB Friends of the Library, are collecting signatures on TWO PETITIONS designed to protect the HB Library System.

  •  PROTECT HB FROM BOOK BANS -- The Council created a Book Review Committee that will forbid librarians from purchasing ANY materials with "sexual references" (including basic information on anatomy or puberty!) designed for children, teens or young adults.  The first petition will allow voters to repeal that ordinance.

  • PROTECT HB FROM LOSS OF CONTROL OVER OUR LIBRARIES -- The new council majority tried to hire a private for-profit company to take over management of our book collection, as well as staff and program management. The second petition will allow voters to determine changes in the management of OUR libraries.

WE HAVE ALMOST ENOUGH SIGNATURES -- HELP US GET THE JOB DONE!

Do We Want Our City Council to Focus on Culture War Issues?

Why Are City Council Meetings SO ANGRY?

  • HUNTINGTON BEACH has developed a national reputation as "Angrytown, USA"..  Is that what we really want?  Do the City's constant lawsuits against the state really benefit the city? Let's become Surf City again!
  • Taking political positions on state and national issues is NOT the normal agenda of most City Councils  -- Their responsibilities normally include budgets, infrastructure, staff, maintenance, public safety, libraries, parks, roads and so on..
  • The city is in a precarious financial position facing a deficit next year while wasting resources on "culture war" issues.

We need to elect City Council members who will pay attention to the City's business, not social/political issues!

Protect HB takes no position about whether the city SHOULD have an airshow. However, we ARE concerned about the contract terms in the Settlement Agreement.

THE RECENTLY REVEALED SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT INCLUDES MAJOR CONCESSIONS AND LONG-TERM GIVEAWAYS TO THE PROMOTER, Pacific Airshow (PA).

IT TOOK A COURT ORDER FOR THE PUBLIC TO BE ALLOWED TO SEE THE TERMS OF THE SETTLEMENT

  • The settlement terms now revealed show that Pacific Airshow will receive over $32 million in cash benefits!
  • Beyond the direct costs in the settlement, the  City will cover Airshow expenses for police, fire, marine safety, maintenance, electricity, road closures, trash collection, etc.
  • The contract with PA is renewable (BY THEM) for 40 YEARS! And PA is even allowed to SELL the contract to another entity, without requiring approval by the city.

We Need a COMPREHENSIVE FINANCIAL ANALYSIS Before Proceeding Any Further!

THE 2nd PETITION SEEKS TO PROTECT THE LIBRARY from private, for-profit management without a vote of the people. Although the recent attempt to privatize the library management failed due to the company rescinding their bid, we have no protection from a future attempt.

DEADLINE OCTOBER 28!

OUR PETITION SEEKS TO REPEAL THE ORDINANCE that would create a 21-person Book Review Board to decide what books will be purchased for the HB Public Library and  remove books  they find unacceptable to a restricted area--ignoring the expertise of professional librarians!
